TWD: Cocoa-Nana Bread

I truly don't ever remember a time when I liked bananas. There are many foods that I liked when I was very little (read:  under 5 years old) only to turn against as I grew up. I didn't eat tomatoes or duck or anything green except the occasional green bean or iceberg lettuce (does that even count as green???) for much longer than I care to admit. Those days are over, though, and while I still have my idiosyncracies when it comes to food, I hope I'm not a "picky eater." *shudder* I do, however, loathe the flavor and texture of bananas, and I don't expect I'll ever like this yellow fruit. It's an interesting fruit, though. There's an interesting book, Banana:  The Fate of the Fruit That Changed the World, that you might give a looksee if you happen to be interested in the history of this popular fruit. (Of course, there are scores of books on the history of this fruit, this just happens to be the one that I'm familiar with.)

I don't like bananas, but I do sort of like to bake things with bananas, if only because it's a little out of my comfort zone and a change from the norm. I mixed and baked this bread precisely as the recipe states, except that it took my bread about 80-85 minutes to cook through to the middle. I took pictures of the slices rather than the whole loaf, because my loaf was seriously unattractive. It looked like a giant brown (smallish) cinder block, and it felt that way, too.

So, I can't give a definitive verdict on the cocoa-nana bread because I didn't taste it, but Dudley enjoyed it. It felt so heavy and dense -- I think it may have been a useful weapon to hurl in a time of distress -- that I couldn't imagine it was very good. Now that I think about it, though, most quick breads are heavy and dense. Dudley said it was tasty warmed up, and I'm going to take his word for it. I do think, because my baking time was sooo long, that this might be better in muffin form. Thank you Steph, of Obsessed with Baking, for hosting this week. I thought this bread was fun to mix up and bake, and it seems like a very comforting thing to nibble on at any time of day.

wow, you are awesome for baking with an ingredient that you despise so much!! It looks great!! Mine didn't look so pretty as a whole loaf either, but I absolutely loved this one!

Looks great on that plate. I think it is funny that you don't like bananas but you like baking with them. A lot of people apparently don't like bananas, who knew??? Happy to hear that Dudley was pleased...always nice when the ones you bake for like what you bake!

Glad your man Dudley liked the bread, it sure looks good. Bummer you don't care for bananas, but how sweet you still cook with them! I was not head over heals in love with this recipe but Im glad I made it!
I added reese's peanut butter cups to mine!

a cinder block?!!!
Um, yes, you could use that as a weapon in a time of distress.
You totally cracked me up this morning.
Thanks for a good laugh.
Way to be a good sport and make something you aren't interested in trying!

lol, I loved your description of it. That book sounds interesting, yet an entire book all about bananas may be a bit TOO much.

We are just the opposite. I like bananas plain, as a banana, but can't handle them in baked goods.

I'm glad that Dudley enjoyed it. You are so good to bake when you really don't care for the finished product. I can see the chocolate chips in your slices, too! Yummy.

Bananas, I think that most people either love them or hate them. There is no middle ground. I love the blue plates and your bread looks nice too.

Ha! Well, if you didn't like it, it definitely could have made a good weapon! It looks gorgeous and I'm glad you made it despite your dislike of bananas!

Yeah!! Dense. Hubs likes dense, but this was over the top...

This was not a keeper. But I feel like I shoud keep trying until it comes out right. SHEESSSHHH!!!

This one was incredibly dense, but yours looks lovely on that pretty blue plate. I read a book about bananas for a sociology of food class in college and it was really interesting.

Well, I think you're a trooper for making this one, even though you hate bananas. I love 'em...usually eat at least one a day, so I jumped at the chance to make this. Love your blog!

I feel the same as you - bananas are only useful for baking with and definitely not to be eaten by themselves! I definitely recommend this recipe in muffin form. It baked a lot more quickly and certainly wasn't heavy enough to be considered a weapon :) Your bread does look great though!

I think it is because banana has a nice odor. I find banana nice to include in some dishes. The bread looks good and it is also so stuffed.

This was such a controversial recipe! These look fantastic on your blue plates.... Dudley liked them - that's a good thing! The loaf looks spectacular!

I did mine as muffins/cupcakes and they seemed to turn out pretty good. I only got a few bites of one, but it was tasty while warm.
