When it comes to my ice cream cones, I've never really been a vanilla ice cream sort of girl. Vanilla ice cream is essential for things like warm brownies, peach cobbler, and apple pie. Hot fudge is lonely without vanilla ice cream, and crushed up Oreos are are a perfect foil for that creamy goodness. But, I never could get excited about plain old vanilla ice cream. It must be people like me who give vanilla a bad name. I've always disliked the use of vanilla as a synonym for meh, or it's all right but it doesn't knock my socks off. While I might not seek out vanilla at the ice cream shop, I understand the purist point of view on this one. A good vanilla ice cream stands in a class by itself. It's the Grand Poobah of ice creams.

So, it really shouldn't come as a great surprise to anyone that once again, the often imitated, but never duplicated, Dorie Greenspan, has come up with a recipe for an insanely good vanilla ice cream. Dudley is a big fan of vanilla ice cream (so much so that he orders vanilla milkshakes, an act that I simply can't fathom. I keep trying to explain that milkshakes were meant to be chocolate!) and Dudley declared this the best vanilla ice cream he'd ever had in his life. He liked this ice cream so much that he devoured the quart over the course of about 36 hours. I was actually going to make some hot fudge for this ice cream, but he declared it so good that hot fudge would only detract from it's very vanilla wonderfulness. Too good for hot fudge? No such thing! However, I was only too happy to let him eat the ice cream while I found other goodies to eat.

I used vanilla beans to flavor the ice cream, and I thought it came together very nicely and easily. The only problem that I ran into is that the full recipe is a scosh large for my KA ice cream bowl so it had some trouble chilling and running over the top. I actually loved the custard base for this, and I had a couple of spoonfuls before I set it in the fridge to chill.
Is it the best vanilla ice cream ever? Dudley certainly thinks so, and I think it's outstanding, too. Last summer I made the Cook's Illustrated vanilla bean ice cream, and earlier this month I made (but never posted, oops!) the Sweet Melissa brown sugar vanilla ice cream. I loved that brown sugar ice cream, I thought it was SO good! I know that people have made David Lebovitz's vanilla ice creams, and I'm interested to hear about how they stack up against this vanilla ice cream. Thanks to Lynne of, Cafe Lynnylu, for picking this very wonderful and versatile recipe this week. You can visit her blog for the recipe!

Love the sprinkles and the glass! :) Great job!
I agree - best vanilla ever. Except I added caramel sauce. Next time, I'll go for the fudge.
Love your parfait glass!
Too good for hot fudge – now, THAT'S a compliment.
Pretty presentation and I like the sprinkles, too. Too good for hot fudge?? I dunno...is that possible? Anyway, nice job!
In glad you think it's outstanding. Im sorry I had to miss this one. Im making the banana bread today!
Oh, I'm a vanilla ice person through and through. I may make and eat lots of flavors, but vanilla is my old-standby. I can't wait to make the original recipe. It looks fabulous.
Your pics are great!! I'm with Dudley - I absolutely loved this ice cream as well!!
Well, I'm glad Dudley was happy! (Is that his real name?) I'm with you on not being a vanilla ice cream kind of person, but as vanilla ice creams go, this one wasn't meh at all.
Beautifully done! and I don't think vanilla ice cream could ever be too good for hot fudge...
also, my word verification is 'fablog': it's like they know ;)
vanilla *can* be transcendent, especially in dorie's hands, yes?!? i love the whimsical sprinkles:)
Your pictures are too cute! I love the sprinkles and the glass!
The perfect sundae. It is a great vanilla - NOT meh!!!
What a beautiful presentation :)
I didnt even get creative this week. I couldnt even find my regular ice cream bowls! ;) Yours looks just like my fave vanilla ice cream--with jimmies.
Before this recipe, I was on your side of the flavor fence. Chocolate and ice cream just go together. Vanilla--boring. After making this recipe (and making it, and making it and making it), I am completely in love with its clean flavors and creamy goodness. How sweet of you to leave it for Dudley to polish off! I wasn't as good in the sharing department.
What an adorable ice cream glass and I'm glad Dudley was such a fan! I've made three types of vanilla ice cream this month and each time my boyfriend says the new one is his favorite. Maybe I should do a taste-off.
Love your presentation with the sprinkles!
DL's vanilla ice cream is a staple in my house (like Dudley, my hubs is huge vanilla ice cream fan), and I would have to say that it's a toss up between his and Dories...they are both equally delicious.
Definitely a party in an ice cream bowl! Those sprinkles just send it over the top. I'm with D...don't need chocolate on this at all.
Hi Jessica!
So nice to hear from you- I'm glad you liked my thumbprint idea. If they're one of your favorites, definitely give that recipe a try... it was fabulous and will be my go-to from now on!
Your vanilla ice cream looks divine, and after reading your post, I think I'm gonna have to give it a try! I usually make David Lebovitz's version, which is awesome btw, but this one might just beat it! If it's the best Dudley's ever had, and he's a vanilla ice cream lover, then it must be truly something special. I'll definitely keep you updated on how I think the two compare, okay?
Can't wait for your double post with the PB cookies. I made them this morning and they are chewy, tender, delicate, and super peanutty! Hope to talk to you again soon... but until then, have a wonderful rest of your week and weekend! :)

Your ice cream looks fantastic - love the sprinkles :) I'm with you on vanilla ice cream in that I much prefer it paired with something than as a stand alone dessert. I used brown sugar in this recipe trying to duplicate the SMS vanilla, but after Dudley's "best ever vanilla" statement I definitely need to try it with granulated sugar!
Sounds like a definite winner, especially classed up with some rainbow sprinkles (unless you call them jimmies?).
Hi Jess, you can email me at detroitfoodexaminer@gmail.com. I would love to give you some suggestions for a perfect cupcake! Sorry, figured Id leave the comment here...couldnt find a 'contact' on your blog. ;)
I couldn't agree more with everything you said here. Vanilla ice cream cries out for brownies, hot fudge, etc. On the other hand, Dorie's is SO good all by itself!
It was soooo good! And who doesn't love sprinkles!
You did a super job on the ice cream. It seems all of you DB's enjoyed it.
I am so glad that you and Dudley both loved this! It looks irresistible with the sprinkles. I never used to consider myself a vanilla person either, but it is kind of growing on me as I get older. It's hard not to love Dorie's vanilla!
LOVE! I mean colored sprinkles are la bomba!!
It looks wonderful. I must agree with Dudley it was the best. I love the sprinkles.
That looks great--I love the sprinkles. =) I've been trying different vanilla ice creams lately, and haven't been able to decide on a favorite.
The grand poobah of ice creams, indeed! Yours looks great, especially with the festive sprinkles. I still give a slight edge to DL's French vanilla ice cream, but I think this one is excellent too.
You've been busy making ice cream! Isn't it fun? Your ice cream looks perfect. Thanks for making Dorie's recipe with me.
