Oh botheration! I am so behind on my blogging, and I do apologize for it. I've actually managed to keep up with making and baking. I just haven't managed to keep up with posting. I got swamped with work and then I left for a bit to go on vacation with my family. I just returned from a lovely trip to Blackberry Farm, and things should hopefully return to normal around here.
I think that I'm a lucky girl, and one reason is because I've had the opportunity to know my grandparents very well. I'm the oldest child of an oldest child, so growing up my grandparents were "young" grandparents. I also had a great-grandmother, BaBa, who is the source of my love of baking. She would come to Houston every year, either for Thanskgiving or Christmas, and I would always help her make the cinnamon rolls, cheese bread, and homemade noodles on my days off of school. When she moved to Houston when I was in middle school, I would go over to her house and we'd pour through issues of Bon Appetit, and make lists of all of the menus we wanted to make. I learned so much from her, and while I am certain that I would like to be in the kitchen without her influence, I credit her with my continued desire to try new things when I'm cooking. When she passed away, my grandmother asked me what I would like, and I asked for her recipe files. She had two metal recipe boxes, one green and one gray, with all of her clipped recipes. When I was going through them right after she passed, I came across a clipping for Katherine Hepburn's brownies. I never made them, but I remembered them because the preface to the recipe included an anecdote similar to Dorie's about Katherine Hepburn and her brownies. I adore Katherine Hepburn. I started watching old movies when I was in about 8th grade or so, and I love all of her movies, but I think that my favorite has to be The Philadelphia Story. So, the combination of memories of my BaBa's recipe files, Katherine Hepburn, and brownies had me very excited to try this recipe.
I made these brownies right before I left for vacation. I had a ton of work to do before I left and some of this work involved a very late night typing my stundents' creative writing anthology. What better fuel for a night of editing and typing then brownies? The brownies are a seriously easy, one bowl/pan recipe. I made them as directed, minus the nuts, baked them, and ate them. No problems here. They're very, very fudgy -- perhaps a little too fudgy for my taste -- but very delicious. Dudley was over when I made them, and he found the Sweet Melissa Brown Sugar Vanilla ice cream in my freezer and used the two to make a delicious brownie sundae. I enjoyed mine plain while typing, and Dudley enjoyed the rest while he took care of Lucy for me. Thanks to Lisa of Surviving Oz for picking this delightful recipe!

What a sweet story - how lucky you were to have your grandma's influence and recipes!
I love your reminisces about growing up and being able to know you grandparents really well. That must be such a sweet legacy to have. I'm glad the brownies carried you through a long night and brought back such good memories!
Oooo, that sounds like a perfect combination: brownies with vanilla ice cream, yum!
I love foods that make you reminise on the past, a great way to think back to your Baba!
Aren't grandma's great? I was literally constructing a post about my grandma as well.
I loved these brownies...they are the best snack for cramming in last minute school work!
What a great post and I love the lazy feet in the hammock. I don't get those days often enough. I think Dudley did it right by tossing some of the SMS ice cream on top. YUM!
Oooh - D and I went to Blackberry Farm for our 10th anniversary last fall; it's an incredible place! I bet it's lovely in the summer! Love hearing about your grandmother - what a treasure that you have her recipes. Your brownies look great; I agree they were fudgey, but nothing that a scoop of ice cream can't fix!
Thanks for this lovely story.
I'm glad you put your brownies to good use as fuel for your work. Well done!
What a wonderful story! You are definitely very lucky to still have your grandparents - and to have had your great-grandmother for so long! I spent a lot of time in the kitchen with my grandmother when I was very young, but she passed away when I was 9. My mom was the next to youngest of 8 kids, so I didn't have "young" grandparents, sadly... Your brownies look perfect, and I can attest to the fact that they are delicious with the brown sugar vanilla ice cream!
Ooooh I just had the BEST sheeps milk cheese from Blackberry Farm and was just on the website looking to buy some! I hop eyou had a fantastic trip! Your brownies look fantastic!
Love your post and love that you cherish your grandmother! Your brownies are perfect!!
Wonderful post. Nothing like handwritten recipes and clippings from your grandma. I have a box with some of my grandma's handwritten recipes and I treasure them. Your brownies look fantastic. I wish I was lying in that hammock.
Cute feet, you all could be foot models! I love your story and I have to say I love old classic movies too!
Your brownies look perfect, I made mini ones!
Love the cherries in the background :) The brownies look great to me!
Cute story... and your pic is fabulous! :) I had such a hard time photographing these.
Great post. Food can bring back such great memories. The Philadelphia Story is my favorite KH movie, too!
Love the hammock picture.
Great story. My grandmother lived with my family when I was growing up and she always let me help her when she was cooking.I cherish all of the things I have of hers and things from her kitchen are my favorite.
What a great story to go along with these delicious brownies!
your brownies look perfect. And of course you are behind in your posting. It's summer!! (I'm stuck at the computer all day at work so it's a little easier to stay up on things).
Love the story about your Grandma.
I love that story so much! I too, am very close to my grandmother and I love the special bond we have. Your brownies look perfect! Welcome back from vaca! Hope it was relaxing!
I also felt quite lucky to know all of grandparents for a long time. They were great. Lucky you to get your granny's recipes - includeing the KH brownies. Glad you finally go to make them
They look amazing.
Your brownies look perfect! How great to have your grandma's recipes! I have a few handwritten from my grandma(one for soap I don't think I'll try), but nothing like boxes full!
Philadelphia Story is my favorite, too. Although, I love them all truthfully. I grew up like you with my grandmother and baking those same things with her. When she passed away, they asked me what I wanted and I got the recipe files, her mixing bowl set, her measuring spoons, her measuring cups, her huge bread dough bowls, and several other utensils...no one else wanted them...I could not believe it for they were the things that reminded me most of our times and to this day I get them all out and use them every single day. Priceless. Loved your post, and your brownies with the papery crust are the best I have seen...great job!
The brownies look perfect! Thanks for sharing such nice memories with us, what a treasure to have your grandmothers old recipes.
I love that you have your great grandma's recipe files (and btw I have that same green file for my clipped recipes; my mom has the faux Pennsylvania Dutch design file) We didn't live close to any family, so I love hearing how you cooked with yours. Your brownies look amazing; the fudgier the better, is what I say!
Love the feetsie picture.
What a lovely blog you have ;)
What lovely memories and lovely brownies :)
That's such a sweet story Jessica! I wish I had memories like that. I hope to be able to pass down love for cooking/baking to my future children so they'll have similar stories to tell :) Your brownies look great. They were a bit too fudgey for me too but other people adored them.
Some foods just remind you of your childhood; for me it was my grandmothers corn fritters. Great looking brownies!!!
What a sweet story! I'm not only glad you liked these, I love that you had a special connection to them! Your BaBa reminds me of my Grandma - and I only wish I had been able to cook alongside her more. (And Philadelphia Story? Oh, yes!)
Jess, brownies is my Achilles' heel. It's the one thing I can never say no to and it is only in that form I will eat chocolate!
