Oven Fried Onion Rings

I hate to get low on "supplies." By supplies, I mean those necessary things that make my life run smoothly: milk for my coffee, baking powder, all of those bathroom necessities, basically anything that's going to make you frown when you open your cupboard and discover that it's not there. Well, I've run dangerously low on supplies here at chez Singleton, and in an effort to remedy the situation, I went to the grocery store after work the other day. I purposely skipped Safeway by work and went over to Harris Teeter in Alexandria because I knew that they'd have everything that I needed. Ah, the best laid plans. This grocery store is in (or next door to) Pentagon Row, a big 'ole complex of restaurants and shops and apartments. Usually I'm there in the morning and parking isn't an issue, but at 5:30 pm on Tuesday night this parking lot was bumping. In fact, there was a decided lack of parking spaces, and the parking lot had turned into one of those disaster zones where people wait and put on their blinker to get a spot. Or, even worse, they tail people around the parking lot to snag their space. I have no patience for this, and I quickly aborted the mission and proceeded on to Whole Foods. As a result, I was able to get some superior meat and organic frozen fruit, but alas, I left without the Baked Lays for these onion rings.

So, I subbed Pirate's Booty! I followed the suggestions and added a little bit of onion and garlic powder to the mixture. As you can see in the picture, I had some trouble getting the crumbs to stick to the onions, but other than that this was a simple recipe. I'm not a really big fan of onion rings, but I thought that these were delicious! I'm sure that they'll be a repeat recipe around here. Thanks, Mary Ann, for picking such a great recipe!

I used to shop at Harris Teeter when I lived in Arlington...I loved how they had that thingie that moved your grocery cart up to the second floor while you too the elevator. The only weird part about it was that in the winter, before a snow storm, HT would always have NO bread, milk, or toilet paper because people were stocking up for 100 days of solitude :).

I had trouble with those crumbs sticking too, but they turned out so tasty. Loved them! Yours look great. I have no idea about Pirate's Booty.

Even with the Baked Lay's, I still had trouble getting the crumbs to stick. But they still tasted good. And yours look great!

How bad does it suck to have to go to multiple grocery stores to get everything you need? HT is good for general stuff, but I don't usually buy my meat/fish there, for that there is WF or the butcher or the fish market. And then things like toilet paper/paper towels/cleaning supplies, are such a raping at HT that we go to a "club" near my parents house in PA and by it in huge bulk (and have no place to store it).

If you are going to Pentagon Row, ALWAYS park in the garage below. Access is easy in and out, there is ample spaces, and HT validates for up to an hour for free.

Wow, I haven't been out there in ages...

Those look so good! I love onion rings but so rarely eat them. I've been looking for a good recipe to make at home so I'll have to try this one!

That stinks about the parking situation. When we used to live in Boston I ran into that situation frequently. It drove me crazy!

Nice call with the Pirate Booty!
So funny (or not so) about the parking....I sooooo have been known to leave a parking lot when things get crazy like that.....as soon as blinkers go on in front of spots, you know you're in trouble!

oooh, pirate booty, very interesting. They looks great, so glad you liked them.

Also FYI - there is a Harris Teeter in the city at 1631 Kalorama Road (in Adams Morgan). Not sure what the parking situation is there, but it may be more convenient for you.

I never would have thought of Pirate's Booty. Good sub! They look delicious. I'm regretting sitting this one out this week but potato chips and I have a love-love affair that I'm trying to break off.
