But, I wanted to make this week's pick because a) I think that it's important to try new things and to revisit things that I didn't like as a child because I'm generally pleasantly surprised and b) I missed last week's CEiMB. So, yesterday after class I walked up to Whole Foods because I am particular about where I buy my meat, especially meat like lamb. I think that there are some great butchers in the area but I didn't have time to search for one and I thought a butcher is probably closed at 7 pm anyway so, Whole Foods it is. I went and procured the lamb and I was standing in line, waiting to check out, pondering my brother's assertion that Whole Foods "is a bunch of hippies saving the world one organic carrot at a time" (mind you, he shops there all of the time so there's no animosity in that statement), and generally minding my own business. I was literally knocked out of my reverie by the very loud slam of my cart into my abdomen. You see, this punk-a** little kid in front of me decided to mess with me. He took his empty cart, turned it around, and gave it a mighty shove into my cart. I like kids a lot, and they generally like me a lot too, but it took all of my "grown up" sensibilities not to rudely shove my cart back into his! And the look I got from him was just daring me to do it, too. We could have had a Billy Madison dodgeball moment: "Now you're all in big, BIG trouble." But his poor mother was embarassed enough as she was whispering to him not to do such things and I thought it was probably best to go back to musing about the organic carrots.

CEiMB: Lamb Stew with Orange

Well, your thematic photo is amazing even if the stew was not (for you at least). So sorry that you were stew-scarred; those childhood aversions can be so strong, but it's a relief when they lose their grip. For a stew lover like me, this dish looks delicious.
Nancy
Your stew looks great, too bad you didn't love it. I really liked it!!
I generally don't dislike kids, but I do when they behave that way!!
Looks great! We like it as well.
Like you, I have not been fond of stew since I was a kid. I've been braved and tried a few stews, but it's not on my list of must have items. Anyway, it's good that you made it. It actualy looks good and I like the way you put the rice in there!
It looks wonderful, so glad you decided to try it out. Your plate is so pretty.
Also, the butcher we go to around here is Waghsals on Mass Ave by AU. You should check it out if you can.
Your stew looks wonderful. Too bad you didn't love it.
Your brother's opinion about WF is fairly spot on; we do most of our shopping there as well.
Boutique butchers in DC? The best is Wagshals on Mass Ave. near AU. Not metro accessible though and pricey, but by far the best in the city.
Nice job with the dish and the post!
Mmm I love adding chickpeas to stew! That looks delicious! And I'll be sure to add you to the list of updates for CupcakeCamp DC!
Love this! And the photos are gorgeous. Try the parsnips next time - they were my favorite part.
Stew is one of those things that could easily scar. Rice with your stew looks wonderful. Sorry about your whole foods experience. Kids and grocery stores are never a great combo. I have two and can attest that I hate taking my kids to the grocery store. Although I never allow them to hit someone on a cart, they frequently run over me. But only on accident.
I don't like lamb but your photos have me drooling! I do a lot of shopping at Whole Foods and I think they've lost some of that hippie idealism, but they still have the best produce and freshest seafood of the chains.
I'm with you - stew is too "suspicious". Lamb, however, it delicious - especially with mint sauce.
wow! lamb and orange. that's intriguing. sorry you didn't like it. i'm not sure how i would have reacted to it either...
Beautiful presentation, and the stew sounds delicious. I love lamb and I love stew.
I so would have shoved the cart back! I don't eat lamb at all and stew isn't my thing, but it looks interesting. I like your placemat.
Your stew looks delicious, and considering your bad memories with stew, i'm great glad that you made it. Thanks for cooking along with me this week :)
I can't believe that kid, and I am sooooooo glad that it wasn't my kid. Actually, mine are usually too busy tormenting each other to bother with tormenting their fellow shoppers. Sorry that you didn't love this, but good for you for trying it. I did not try it because I am not a lamb lover, and I spent too much time thinking about what meat to substiture and just ran out of time. Wish you enjoyed this more, but that's great that Dudley really liked it! That must mean that this is a great lamb stew for the lamb and stew lovers of the world! It looks delicious.
even though it wasn't a hit, it looks pretty and the idea behind it is so unique! i never would've paired orange with lamb. duly noted. :)
How very brave of you to try a stew recipe after your scarring childhood experience! The stew certainly looks great, and I'm pleased that you liked it a little bit. You're making progress on your stew/lamb eh-eh feelings!
